On The March

Content by Oxford Playhouse

This month sees Oxford Playhouse and Oxford City Council jointly presenting a powerful new play in Oxford Town Hall, marking the start of a 6-month programme of theatre to celebrate the centenary of female suffrage.

Written by award-winning playwright Clare Bayley, On the March stars the Playhouse’s 17|25 Young Company. They will present a moving and insightful look at the battles for women’s rights that have punctuated the last century, from the national Women’s March in 1917 (which stopped off in Oxford itself) to the current day experience of women in politics and the public eye.

Deftly weaving together women’s stories from throughout the last century, it invites you to explore our collective political history. Prepare to meet some inspiring and diverse characters, tied together through the experience of protest and progress.

Directed by Jo NobleOn the March will be performed in promenade style in the Oxford Town Hall. As historic surroundings meet a vibrant young company of actors, we cast one eye back on the past and keep another fixed firmly on the march to the future.

Playwright Clare Bayley grew up in Oxford and has had work presented at the National Theatre, in the West End and at the Edinburgh Festival. She was a Playhouse Playmaker writer-on-attachment in 2015.

On the March is the opening event of the A Vote of Her Own season which includes appearances by speakers such as Shirley Williams and Women’s Hour Jenni Murray, major mainstage dramas which highlight women and women’s history and a two seasons of exclusively women-led productions in the Burton-Taylor Studio.
